What is an ultrasound?
Ultrasonography, also known as sonography, is a diagnostic imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to generate real-time images of organs, tissues, and internal structures of the body. It is a non-invasive, safe and widely used procedure in various medical specialties.
The duration of an ultrasound It varies depending on the type of study and the area of the body to be evaluated, but in general:
Abdominal or pelvic ultrasound: between 15 and 30 minutes.
Obstetric ultrasound (pregnancy): between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on the stage of pregnancy and the level of detail required.
Doppler ultrasound: around 30 to 45 minutes.
Echocardiogram: between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the complexity.
How is an ultrasound performed?
During an ultrasound, the patient lies on a table and the technician applies a conductive gel to the skin in the area to be examined. A transducer is then inserted, emitting sound waves that bounce off internal structures and generate images on a monitor.
